A Scotch mist had been suspected to hang its mystery over the page; his imagination was borne up on Highland superstitions and obsolete traditions, ‘sailing with supreme dominion’ through the murky regions of ignorance and barbarism; and if ever at a loss, his invention was eked out and _got a cast_ by means of ancient documents and the records of criminal jurisprudence or fanatic rage. Every time he looks at it, he is put in mind of this pleasure; and the object in this manner becomes a source of perpetual satisfaction and enjoyment. It is only when particular examples are given that we perceive distinctly either the concord or disagreement between our two affections and those of the agent, or feel a social gratitude arise towards him in the one case, or a sympathetic resentment in the other. Thus the word _green_ expresses a certain quality considered as qualifying, or as in concrete with, the particular subject essay urban and rural to which it may be applied. Probably there are no two opinions regarding the impropriety of allowing the list to be used for commercial purposes along either line. The medi?val writers of the laughable story in verse (the “fabliau” or “Conte a rire en vers”) held firmly to the belief in the “sanitary virtue” (“vertu saine”) of a burst of laughter. If our public comes to us naturally to read these records and if our writers know this and write for a public interested in reality, the library has done its part. In connection with the scheme, the training class was much extended in scope and its course broadened and made to cover an educational year. All the splendour of the highest prosperity can never enlighten the gloom with which so dreadful an idea must necessarily overshadow the imagination; nor, in a wise and virtuous man, can all the sorrow of the most afflicting adversity ever dry up the joy which necessarily springs from the habitual and thorough conviction of the truth of the contrary system. His is a frail and feverish existence accordingly, and he soon exhausts himself in the tormenting pursuit—in the alternate excitement of his imagination and gratification of his vanity. An imposing detail of passing events, a formal display of official documents, an appeal to established maxims, an echo of popular clamour, some worn-out metaphor newly vamped-up,—some hackneyed argument used for the hundredth, nay thousandth, time, to fall in with the interests, the passions, or prejudices of listening and devoted admirers;—some truth or falsehood, repeated as the Shibboleth of party time out of mind, which gathers strength from sympathy as it spreads, because it is understood or assented to by the million, and finds, in the increased action of the minds of numbers, the weight and force of an instinct. Upon the plinth are the names of the four ships, “Vanguard, Captain, Elephant, and Victory,” on board which the heroic Admiral’s flag was so valorously displayed; and on the coping of the terrace are inscribed the names of the four principal battles—“Aboukir, St. He who laughs at the same joke, and laughs along with me, cannot well deny the propriety of my laughter. The inspiration of the Muse comes not with the _fiat_ of a monarch, with the donation of a patron; and, therefore, the Great turn with disgust or effeminate indifference from the mighty masters of the Italian school, because such works baffle and confound their self-love, and make them feel that there is something in the mind of man which they can neither give nor take away. Some of the greatest improvements in library service are due to persons with an imagination and an initiative especially prone to run wild in impractical suggestions. Boys whose shoes were newly greased with lard were thought to have a special power of detecting witches, and enthusiastic judges accordingly would sometimes station them, after duly anointing their boots, at the church doors, so that the luckless wretches could not get out without being recognized.[1717] How shocking was the abuse made of this arbitrary power is well illustrated by a case which occurred in the Spanish colony of New Granada about the year 1580. 28. As an affair of sensation, or memory, I can feel no interest in any thing but what relates to myself in the strictest sense. I understand by association of ideas the recollecting or perceiving any two or more ideas together, or immediately one after the other. The fact, as stated in itself, is an anomaly: as thus explained, by combining it with a general state of feeling in a country, it seems to point out a great principle in society. This grade of librarian includes as many kinds as there are persons or classes of the community that may be discouraged. Next, the people who frequent the library are intelligent. It is running strong, but there is room for a long course, and that course, I believe, it will take. struck a fatal blow at the barbaric systems of the ordeal and sacramental compurgation by forbidding the rites of the Church to the one and altering the form of oath customary to the other. The mode in which our author proposes to correct the extravagance of public opinion, and qualify the interest taken in such persons as Rousseau and Madame de Warens, is singular enough, and savours of the late unlucky bias of his mind:—it is by referring us to what the well-bred people in the neighbourhood thought of Rousseau and his pretensions a hundred years ago or thereabouts.
